Tips for Storing Your Utility Trailer
Your utility trailer clocks a lot of hard hours, but occasionally you need to store it. Whether you need to stow it away during cooler months or you’re simply waiting for your next project, there are several steps you can take to make sure your trailer is stored properly.
Choose the Right Space
The first step to proper storage is choosing the right space for your trailer. Ideally you’ll have access to shelter that can protect it from the elements, but it’s more important to find an area that will provide adequate space. You want to choose an area that can comfortably store the trailer and also allows you access to it!
Cover the Trailer
Even if you can park the trailer underneath a sheltered area, it can be beneficial to cover it with a tarp or other fitting. It’s not necessary to purchase an exact-fitting cover, but you should consider any ramps or customizations that will require additional coverage.
Remove Stress and Protect the Tires
When it’s time to store your utility trailer, make sure to relieve any stress on it by jacking it up. If it needs to sit for a long period of time, even the normal weight can cause unwanted pressure on the tires and suspension. You can use concrete blocks or wooden beams to reduce the stress of weight.
You should also protect the tires during storage by inflating them completely or completely removing them. The rubber can crack without protection and proper inflation! Plus, precipitation or temperature fluctuation can also cause problems. It may be appropriate to completely remove the tires so they can be stored somewhere dry.
Apply Grease
Finally, you may want to grease any moving parts before committing your trailer to storage. Apply grease to the axle bearings, hinges, hitch, and suspension. This will make it much easier when you’re ready to use your utility trailer again!
Properly storing your trailer will improve its longevity and keep it in top condition! Hopefully these tips will help you protect your trailer whenever it's not in use for long periods.
