RV Fridge - Maintenance
Now that refrigerators come equipped in most types of RVs, it makes it possible to prepare different meals and have more options with what you cook each day. Like other features in the RV, the refrigerator needs attention and maintenance to ensure it continues to operate reliably. You can learn more about how to care for the RV fridge from the experts at Allan Dale Trailers & RVs in Red Deer and Edmonton, Alberta, serving Alberta.
Read the Owner's Manual
The owner's manual that comes with the RV fridge will give you insight into the different parts and components. It will inform you how it operates on propane compared to the refrigerator you have at home. Read through it to gain insight into performing general maintenance and resolve any issues that develop over time.
Allow it to Run for 12 Hours
Before you load up your refrigerator with food, it is important to allow it to run for at least 12 hours when you're preparing to take a trip. This will allow the fridge to reach 33 to 41 degrees to prevent it from working harder than necessary to get to the right temperature if food is already inside.
It's also important to avoid overpacking the refrigerator, which can put excess strain on the parts. There should be enough space to allow for air to circulate around all the food. Removing extra plastic on the packages can free up more space.
Defrost the Fridge
You need to plan to defrost the refrigerator at times when you notice a build-up of ice on the evaporator fins. Turn the temperature down to prevent your food from becoming frozen as it's stored inside the appliance.
Park in the Right Spot
You'll need to find a place where there's shade to ensure the outside components of the fridge don't sit out in the sun when you reach your destination. It's also necessary to park on a level surface because of the propane flame. You'll also need to do this for the sake of other appliances that run off of propane in the RV.
Keep the Door Shut
Always try to keep the door to the refrigerator shut because excess heat and moisture can start to accumulate inside of the appliance. Your refrigerator will work harder than necessary to try and stay cool and at the right temperature.
